New To Counselling

If this is your first experience of counselling or you’re not sure what it might involve it may be useful to read these notes outlining what counselling is and what you can expect from working alongside me.

Counselling is based on the client and the counsellor working together in a meaningful way to unravel and understand what is causing you to feel as you do. It means you will be really listened to in a calm and respectful environment, a place you can express yourself freely without fear of being judged. It can take courage to look at your life experiences and we can respectfully work on the changes you wish to make. Sometimes you won’t know what those changes are straight away; you just know you don’t feel too good in some way.

I will help you find out the reasons and as your counsellor I won’t criticise you or tell you what to do. I will help you to understand more about your feelings and thoughts and what they mean to you. Together we can look at ways you may choose to deal with issues in a more positive way and in a way that feels safe and right for you.

Our counselling work is confidential and what we talk about in the room is just between us. However very rarely, if I am concerned that you or someone close to you is in danger of harm we may need to discuss how this will affect our contract of confidentiality. I am bound by and adhere to the guidelines for good practice in the BACP Ethical Framework

How long does counselling last?

Sessions can be up to one hour long. During the initial session, if you decide you would like to work alongside me, we can discuss what your expectations are and how often we will work together. Often people begin with 6 sessions, usually once a week, and find this is enough for them. Other people benefit from longer psychotherapy and can continue working for many weeks. Whatever the length of the work, we can regularly review how you feel you are getting on so we can be clear of our commitment whilst working with your best interests in mind. Although it is usual to keep to a specific day and time, this may not always be possible for you so I will do my best to be flexible and work within your schedule.

Counselling is by no means the 'easy option' but through awareness comes more choice.  It takes courage, commitment and time to enable positive movement towards a more meaningful life. We are all social beings who seek our unique and secure place within the world.

If you would like further information please contact me by phone or email, without obligation, to make an appointment. All calls, messages and emails are confidential.
